General air tightness topics  ·  05. February 2018

Is air infiltration into the building visible?

massive air infiltration through a timber joist ceiling
standard air infiltration through a recess light without down light cover

By doing surveys for existing houses, to help the home owners to find out what causes the heat loss and draught in their building, we often come across with very common problems.

A timber joist ceiling will cause air infiltration in the most cases, because the joists have mostly direct access to the cavity and an air tight sealing layer around each joist was never considered in recent years.

Recess lights are another main source for unwanted air infiltration. FYI the cheap & chearful sealing by using flower pots does not solve this problem.

Beside the official air tightness testing for new buildings, we provide a full service to detect sources of heat loss and draughts in existing houses. Furthermore we provide suggestions (without obligation), how to get existing problems solved.
